What to Wear to Your First Class

For your first class at Gracie Barra Manotick, comfortable athletic clothing is all you need. No gi or specialty gear required. What you wear differs slightly for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu versus Muay Thai, and we break down both below.

One of the most common questions before a first class has nothing to do with technique: what am I supposed to wear? The short answer is simple. For a first visit, comfortable athletic clothing works for both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Beyond that, there are a few small differences worth knowing, along with some general advice that makes your first class more comfortable.

What to Wear for Your First BJJ Class

  • A well-fitting t-shirt or rash guard. Avoid anything with zippers, buttons or hard logos that could scratch a training partner.
  • Athletic shorts or leggings. Skip pockets, zippers or hard clasps, since they can snag during grappling.
  • Bare feet. BJJ is trained barefoot on the mats, so plan to leave your shoes at the edge.
  • Hair tied back and nails trimmed short. Both make close-contact training more comfortable for you and your partner.

You do not need a gi for a first class. If you decide to keep training in the gi program, a coach can walk you through gear at that point.

What to Wear for Your First Muay Thai Class

  • A breathable t-shirt or tank. Muay Thai pad rounds move fast and get warm quickly.
  • Athletic shorts you can kick in. Avoid jeans, jean shorts, or anything restrictive through the hips.
  • Bare feet. Like BJJ, Muay Thai training is typically done barefoot.
  • A water bottle. Pad work adds up fast, and staying hydrated makes a real difference.

Gloves, wraps and shin guards are not required for a first trial class. If Muay Thai becomes a regular part of your training, your coach can recommend gear that suits your pace and goals.

What You Do Not Need on Day One

You do not need a gi, gloves, wraps, shin guards or any branded gear to try your first class in either program. All of that can wait until after your trial, once you know whether you want to keep training. Nobody expects a new student to show up fully kitted out, and coaches would rather see you focused on the class than worrying about equipment.

A Few Small Things That Help

Beyond clothing, a little basic hygiene goes a long way in a training environment where you are working closely with a partner. Trimmed nails, clean training gear, and skipping heavy cologne or perfume before class are small courtesies that make training more comfortable for everyone on the mats.

You do not need the right gear to start. You just need to show up.

FAQCommon Questions

Gear questions, answered.

Do I need a gi for my first class?+

No. You do not need a gi or any specialized gear for your first class. Comfortable athletic clothing is enough to get started.

What should kids wear to their first class?+

The same idea applies for kids: comfortable athletic clothing they can move freely in, with hair tied back and nails trimmed short.

Can I wear shoes on the mats?+

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and most Muay Thai training is done barefoot on the mats, so plan to remove your shoes before stepping on.

What if I do not have workout clothes?+

Any comfortable, non-restrictive clothing works for a first visit. The goal is simply to be able to move freely, and you can always dial in your gear later.
