Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Adults in Manotick.
Beginner-friendly grappling for all levels, trained in the gi and no-gi. Most adults who walk in have never trained before, and your first class is free.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling art. Instead of striking, you learn to control a partner, work from every position, and finish with leverage-based techniques rather than strength. It is a thinking person's martial art, which is exactly why adults of every age and background take to it. If you are still working out what the art actually involves, our plain guide to what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is covers the basics.
Is adult BJJ good for complete beginners?
Yes. Most adults who walk into Gracie Barra Manotick have never trained before. You are not thrown into hard sparring on day one. You are paired with a friendly training partner, walked through a few fundamentals, and encouraged to move at your own pace. The room is built for the person who feels nervous to walk in, not for the person who already knows how to fight. Control, escapes, submissions.
Every class builds the same fundamentals, step by step. You are never expected to know them coming in.
- Control and position: how to stay safe, keep your balance, and hold a strong position.
- Escapes: how to calmly get out of bad spots instead of panicking.
- Submissions: the leverage-based finishes that let technique beat size.
- Live training: when you are ready, light rolling with partners who match your pace.

Gi and no-gi, both every week.
You do not have to choose. We train both styles, and beginners are welcome in either. Here is how they compare.
| Style | What you wear | How it feels | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gi | A traditional jiu-jitsu uniform | Slower and more technical: you can grip the fabric | Patient control and detailed problem-solving |
| No-Gi | Athletic wear, such as a rash guard and shorts | Faster and more slippery: no fabric to grip | Scrambles, pace, and a sweat-heavy workout |

Adult BJJ, answered.
Do you have martial arts classes for teenagers?+
Yes. Our adult programs are open from age 13, so a teenager trains in the adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai classes rather than the kids ones. A new teen starts on the same fundamentals path every adult beginner starts on, and coaches pair them with patient training partners.
Do I need any experience to try adult BJJ?+
No. Most adults who start have never trained before. You are paired with a friendly partner, walked through the fundamentals, and you move at your own pace from your first class.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?+
In gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu you wear a traditional uniform and can grip the fabric, which rewards patient, technical control. No-gi is trained in athletic wear, with no fabric grips, so it is faster and more slippery. We train both every week, and beginners are welcome in either.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for older beginners?+
Yes. Older beginners are a normal part of the adult classes, not an exception, and plenty of people start in their 30s, 40s or 50s. You train at your own pace, you tap early rather than riding anything out, and the fundamentals path is built to be joined at any age.
Am I too old or too out of shape to start?+
No. Adults start at every age and fitness level, and plenty begin in their 30s, 40s or 50s. You set your own pace, rest whenever you need to, and the fundamentals are taught step by step, so you build fitness as you learn rather than needing it first.
What should I wear to my first adult class?+
Comfortable athletic clothes, like a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. You do not need a gi to start; a coach will guide you on gear once you are training regularly.
